I used to beat Roy Keane at training ground challenge every week – it left him skint!

Paul Lambert has joked that he regularly left Manchester United legend Roy Keane skint during his brief spell with Aston Villa.

The former United captain agreed to join Lambert as assistant manager back in 2014, despite never being team-mates. The pair had come into contact after Keane reached out to Lambert during his time at Villa and seemingly built an instant rapport based on their competitive natures.

The role did not work out for Keane, who opted to leave the club after just four months.to concentrate on being Martin O’Neill’s assistant with the Republic of Ireland. However, Lambert has revealed that the United great was still made to cough up every Friday at Villa after losing a weekly challenge.

“He’ll tell you himself, I used to beat him every Friday at crossbar challenge. He used to buy the doughnuts and cakes, every Friday he was skint!” Lambert joked on the Undr the Cosh podcast.

“He was going to every cake shop in Manchester to get me cakes. We would always have a competition. We still laugh about it now but I just liked his mindset and I never felt anything other than, ‘I like the way you think about football’. That’s why I asked him to come.”

The competitiveness between the two former Champions League winners was evident from their first meeting as Lambert explained his delight at winning a game of snooker at Keane’s house. The ex-Villa boss was asked about the coaching dynamic between himself and Keane, given the latter’s success as a player and strong personality.
