"I took my mum backpacking with my girlfriend – to celebrate her being cancer free"
A mum has been backpacking around south east Asia's party islands with her 27-year-old daughter and her girlfriend after being declared cancer free.
Kate Gearing, 69, joined daughter Nessie and her partner Becca Wolfenden after she was given the all clear in January 2022. The mum had been battling breast cancer since 2021, and underwent an operation to remove the lump followed by radiation treatment.
Now Kate has surprised her daughter by being up for anything on the trio's trip to Thailand - including snorkelling, visiting elephants, and even partying the night away.

Kate, a retired doctor, from Gairloch, Wester Ross, Scotland, said the trip was 'exhausting' but she was 'enjoying it'.
"They are leading me all over the place," she added. "It’s been great fun. Luckily my cancer was picked up and treated.
“Make the most the of what time you have and have fun.”
Nessie, who owns a development trust charity with Becca, said her mum had a huge change in character since her treatment, and was 'more free' since they started travelling.
“She’s legendary," added Becca. “Seeing her now backpacking and lying on a beach carefree is so nice.”
The young couple said Kate was 'very resilient' and a 'fighter'.
Kate was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2021 and had an operation to remove the lump, followed by radiation before being given the all clear in January 2022.
The couple, who have already been on UK trips with Kate, invited her to travel around Thailand with them – and were surprised when she wanted to do it by backpacking.
