"I thought he was going to die": Thug smashed bottle over his own head before stabbing friend on boys night out

A boys night out took a violent turn when one of the group smashed a glass bottle over his own head and stabbed his friend in the side. The victim collapsed, appearing lifeless, causing his friends to fear he was going to die.

The incident happened while 27 year old Liam Jones was out drinking with friends in Porth, Rhondda, on October 4, when an argument broke out within the group. The majority wanted to go to Squares nightclub, which Jones objected to as he was banned from the venue.

Cardiff Crown Court heard during a sentencing hearing on Monday that the group had been at a pub where Jones had been arguing with another group of men. Later in the evening, he started shouting at his friends, and Robbie Thorburn and Callum Williams attempted to pacify him.

He then lunged at the victim and stabbed him in the side, inflicting a 1.5cm puncture wound, reports Wales Online.

After Mr. Thorburn became "floppy" and fell to the ground, bleeding from his back, the defendant fled the scene. Emergency services were called and Mr. Thorburn was rushed to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, where he received eight stitches for his wound.
