For a man who has played for Manchester United and won the Premier League title, some might wonder what Danny Simpson is thinking.

Tonight, the former defender will step through the ropes and make his boxing debut at the 3Arena in Dublin. In front of a sell-out crowd, Simpson will fight influencer Danny Aarons on the Misfits Boxing X Series 17 show.

Simpson went face-to-face with the 22-year-old, who has millions of subscribers across social media, this week and was offered a high-stakes bet. The social media star, also making his Misfits Boxing debut, said he would hand over his YouTube gold plaque - awarded for gaining one million subscribers - if he loses to the now 37-year-old.

But should Aarons defeat the former United man, then he must give him his league winners' medal. Simpson did not hesitate in agreeing to the bet, with the fight rivals shaking hands to confirm the deal.

However, for Simpson, there is a much more serious reason behind why he has opted to step into the ring tonight. Having made the decision to hang up his boots back in July, the Eccles-born former defender has tried his hand at golf and padel but admits that neither have provided him with the discipline he was missing after stepping away from the world of football.
