'I'm not going to lie' - Manchester United legend Denis Irwin reacts to Man City Treble win

Manchester United legend Denis Irwin thinks Manchester City will gain even more momentum and confidence after winning the Treble.

United became the first English side to complete the Treble of the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in '99, with the final trophy being won in dramatic circumstances against Bayern Munich at Camp Nou.

It's taken over two decades for that achievement to be equalled, but Pep Guardiola's side have enjoyed a remarkable campaign which ended with victory in the Champions League against Inter Milan.

United had the opportunity to deny City in the FA Cup final at Wembley on their way to Istanbul, but the Blues won that game 2-1 thanks to a brace from Ilkay Gundogan and poor goalkeeping from David de Gea.

Irwin, speaking to The Irish Times, admitted he hoped City would lose in the Champions League final, but he still praised their achievement.

“I’m not going to lie, I didn’t want them to win," Irwin said. "They are both great achievements. Don’t take anything away from either club, whoever does the Quadruple, that’ll take some doing. The money is totally different in this day and age to where we were.

“It gives you momentum, it gives you confidence, I suppose, on the back of that. They’ve won plenty, with five leagues in the last six, so they’re a great team at the moment, but it’s up to others to catch up.”

Irwin also gave his verdict on Brighton striker and fellow Irishman Evan Ferguson, who has been linked with a move to Old Trafford.

“He is at a good place at the moment, we have not had a centre forward with his ability since Robbie Keane,” he added.
