'I'm deeply, deeply sorry': Doctor's heartbreaking apology after admitting mistakes which led to baby's death
A doctor whose mistakes led to the death of a new-born baby boy broke down in tears as she said she was 'deeply, deeply sorry'. Finnley Morris was left without oxygen for more than 50 minutes after Dr Surya Dhulipala failed to insert a breathing tube him after he was born, LancsLive reports.
A tribunal heard Finnley was delivered at 22 minutes after midnight on October 1, 2020 at Blackpool Victoria Hospital after first-time mum Emma began to experience pelvic pain and her baby's movements changed. Nurses made a 'crash call' for registrar Dr Dhulipala after Finnley became 'pale and floppy' and wasn't breathing.
The doctor arrived eight minutes after Finnley's birth but failed to carry out standard neonatal procedures to protect his airway and administer oxygen and other life-saving treatment after incorrectly believing she had seen his chest rising and falling to indicate he was breathing. The on-call consultant, Dr Sunitha Peiris, arrived in the delivery suite 31 minutes after Finnley was born and immediately asked Dr Dhulipala why she hadn't already intubated him.

There was then a further delay because Dr Peiris had forgotten her reading glasses. By the time Finnley finally began to receive oxygen it was more than 50 minutes after he had been born. He was transferred to the Royal Preston Hospital but sadly died four days later on October 5.
A coroner concluded in 2021 that Finnley had been neglected by medics at Blackpool Victoria and said that it not been for the missed opportunities to treat Finnley he would have survived. This week the General Medical Council, which is responsible for the register of medical
