'I got on the property ladder at 36 - I never wanted to buy until now'

Getting a foot on the property ladder is a goal for many people - but not everyone is that way inclined. Whilst buying a home offers more security and is a good investment for the future, some prefer renting as it comes with more flexibility and fewer up-front costs.

For Rohit Bedi, 37, putting his money into bricks and mortar was an 'unattractive move' and not something that interested him until late last year. The busy creative textile designer from Nottingham rented for several years in different parts of Greater Manchester, and only decided he wanted to buy when he had a 'mindset shift'.

Now living in his own apartment in Ancoats, Rohit spoke to the Manchester Evening News as part of our Where I Live series. Each week we speak to a different homeowner who lives in our region to hear about their home-buying journey - and take a peek inside their home.

After landing his first design job in Cheshire, Rohit began renting in Macclesfield, before later living in Sale, Salford and most recently Longsight. He was happy with his living circumstances with no desire to buy, until one day he felt a 'hunch' that he was ready to take the next step.

"Buying a house was never in the forefront of my mind, it has always been a very unattractive move for me personally," Rohit told the Manchester Evening News. "At the time I was genuinely not ready or interested in buying, but then where I was renting previously, I felt like my journey of living there had ended and I felt ready to buy rather than continue renting. I thought I’ve just got to do it now and rip that plaster off."
