"I do know..." - Journalist claims Southampton still eyeing "outstanding" 6 ft 3 titan

Southampton remain keen to sign West Bromwich Albion ace Sam Johnstone but are also ‘looking at other targets’ in case they fail to lure the goalkeeper to St Mary’s, according to The Sun journalist Tom Barclay.

Johnstone’s £18,000-per-week contract is set to expire in the summer, meaning he will leave West Brom for nothing, but Southampton are facing stiff competition for his services.

It is understood that Southampton are battling it out with the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur for Johnstone ahead of him becoming a free agent.

The 29-year-old has been on Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl’s radar for a prolonged period of time, with his interest also coming to the surface last November.

Everton are another Premier League club known to be keen on acquiring Johnstone, but it seems as though the shot-stopper has already decided on where his next destination will be.

That is because the three-cap England international has reportedly told those close to him that he wants to join Tottenham.

Widespread interest in Johnstone should come as little surprise, with former England international Glenn Hoddle previously describing his performances for West Brom as ‘outstanding’.

Despite Southampton’s continued pursuit, Barclay believes Johnstone is destined to join Tottenham at the end of the season.

The journalist understands Hasenhuttl has already made plans in case Saints fail to persuade the 6’3 star to head to St Mary’s.
