‘I’d do it again’ – Tottenham star Eric Dier opens up about fan confrontation incident

Tottenham star Eric Dier says he has no regrets regarding the time he confronted a fan in the stands who was hurling abuse at his brother.

Back in March 2020, Spurs embarrassingly lost in the FA Cup to Norwich, but it was what happened after the match that made the headlines.

Dier was seen entering the stands of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to confront a fan and protect his younger brother Patrick from harm.

The defender was later handed a four-match ban and slapped with a £40,000 fine by the FA over the incident, but over two years on, the England international says he would happily do it again.

‘I’ve never spoken about that situation in the press before because, to be honest, I wasn’t at all happy with the way it was handled,’ Dier said.

‘I don’t know what I can say about it because I don’t know if I’ll get banned or fined again or whatever. It wasn’t too dramatic like people make it out to be. But, yeah, I don’t regret it at all and I’d do it again.

‘[For] my family, my team-mates, anyone, a friend of mine. I consider myself to be extremely loyal.’

Many questions have been raised about football fans behaviour at games, especially since stadiums returned to full capacity after the COVID-19 lockdowns.

For Dier, it has ‘definitely’ gotten worse over the past few seasons, so much so that he doesn’t want his family to attend away games for fears over their safety, though he claims Tottenham fans are just as guilty.

‘I had some family and friends at the Chelsea away game with Tottenham [in August] and they had problems and stuff,’ the 28-year-old added.

‘Not nice ones either. It is a serious problem.

‘It was verbal, not physical, but like, bad stuff. One incident was in the Tottenham away end. I
