I came from Iceland and became instant Man City hero with iconic debut - I can't believe what happened

When the best in England weren't available, Kevin Keegan turned to Iceland to help Manchester City.

With David Seaman injured and new buy David James cup-tied, Keegan needed a goalkeeper for their upcoming FA Cup game at Tottenham. Enter Arni Arason, an Icelandic 'keeper who had recently been released by Norwegian team Rosenborg.

What followed was beyond anyone's expectations. City trailed Tottenham 3-0 at White Hart Lane as they went in at half-time, a man down after a daft red card from Joey Barton, without their star striker Nicolas Anelka who had limped off with injury, and with a goalkeeper wondering what on earth he had come into.

"I think the whole team was in shock at half-time," Arason told the Manchester Evening News in 2017. "I let in three goals in the first half of my first game so I was shocked. We just tried to win the second half for pride."

City nearly went further behind at the beginning of the second half but a crucial double save from Christian Ziege and Gus Poyet helped Arason restore some pride and his teammates kicked on at the other end of the pitch. One turned to two and when an equaliser was scored the Blues were deliriously contemplating the prospect of a glorious defeat in extra time.

Jon Macken had other ideas, scoring a wonderful header in injury time to complete one of the finest comebacks and matches in the history of the FA Cup. As debuts go, Arason's couldn't have been much more memorable.
