I almost took up Super Eagles’ job, says Renard
Two-time Africa Cup of Nations winning coach, Herve Renard, has disclosed that he almost became Super Eagles coach early this year.
Renard, who led the French women’s national team to the 2023 FIFA World Cup and the Paris 2024 Olympics, was one of the coaches said to have been consulted by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to replace Finidi George when the former Ajax star resigned after four matches.
The job was eventually given to Germany’s Bruno Labbadia, who rejected the offer.
Speaking in an interview with French sports daily, L’Equip, Renard said he rejected the offer to come to Nigeria after thorough introspection.
“I almost went to Nigeria… I weighed up the pros and cons for a few days, even a few weeks before refusing. It is the best offer I have had so far,the rest didn’t suit me.”
Renard first came to limelight in 2012 when he led Zambia to win the Africa Cup of Nations. He repeated the feat in 2015 with Cote d’Ivoire before stunning the world at the 2022 FIFA World Cup when he led Saudi Arabia to a first round defeat of eventual champions, Argentina, in Qatar.
