Hurling fans evacuated from Chadwicks Wexford Park due to fire in Main stand

Fans had to be evacuated from Chadwicks Wexford Park at the Allianz Hurling League Division 1 match between Wexford and Galway this afternoon after a fire broke out at the Main stand.

Match play was delayed by 15 minutes while fans were left waiting outside the stadium for 15 to 20 minutes.

Despite some match goers complaining on social media of poor handling of the situation, CEO of Wexford GAA Gavin O'Donovan said that the evacuation ran smoothly and there was "no panic" during the incident.

"There was only a small bit of smoke and the air handling vent is damaged but there was no damage to the room that it was in. Nobody was hurt or injured as a result".

He praised the response of emergency services to the incident, while a spokesperson for the Wexford County Fire Service told RTÉ News that the cause of the fire appeared to be electrical.

He said that smoke came out of a vent after an air-conditioning unit went on fire. The mains power in the stadium was out for a time as a result.
