France's Antoine Rozner carded nine birdies in a flawless opening 63 at Jack Nicklaus Golf Club in Incheon to make the perfect start to his bid for a fourth DP World Tour title.
The Irish pair however will have plenty of work to do tomorrow to make the cut for the weekend.
Waterford's Hurley enjoyed a better back nine with birdies at 15 at the par-5 18th, but three bogeys and a double-bogey at 6 sees the 30-year-old on three-over par.
McKibbin joins him on that score after a rocky back nine. Double-bogeys at 14 and 15 were followed by a bogey at the 16th, but he did pick up a shot at the last.
Rozner is the man to catch and heads into the second round with a four-shot lead over Sanghyun Park and Andy Sullivan
"A lot of things went my way today," Rozner said. "I obviously played well, but you need a bit of luck to shoot 63, especially on a hard golf course like this one.
"I holed a really good putt on the 11th hole, my second hole of the day. It went straight in the centre of the hole and I thought maybe it could be a good day and it was. I'm really pleased.
"It was a pure day of golf, one of those days when you wish you could play like this all the time."
