Hungry Brits desperate to try 'game-changer' crumpet topping – it's not what you would expect

Crumpets, the classic British savoury snack typically enjoyed with a generous dollop of butter, have been given a tantalising twist by a home chef.

The creation - by TikTok cook Emily (@emilyscooking) - left her 143,000 followers drooling and desperate to try it out for themselves. Emily detailed her unusual method in a video captioned: "I've been on a crumpet hype this year, I should probably stop but I can't."

Londoner Emily begins her recipe with an unconventional approach, by slicing the crumpet horizontally, as you would a bread roll, before slathering the base with butter and pickle. This is followed by a slice of cheese and more pickle on top before the whole thing is reassembled.

But the innovation doesn't end there - on top of the stacked crumpet goes another slice of cheese coupled with a generous splash of Worcestershire sauce. The sloppy final result isn't toaster-friendly, so Emily opts for crisping it in an air fryer instead.

She continues: "This was so delicious and the crumpet soaked up all the flavours! By making it this way you can add fillings inside and on the top. I used butter, cheddar, pickle and Worcestershire sauce. I cooked mine in the air fryer at 180C for about 5-10 minutes, it depends how many you put in. You can cook it in the oven too!"

Following the video, the TikTok community swiftly chimed in with their personal spins on Emily's creation. One user chimed in suggesting a combination of cheese and tomato puree to create "pizza crumpets", while another sang praises for marmite and scrambled egg-loaded crumpets, calling them absolute "game-changers".

Another person commented: "Now why the hell have I never done this? Genius! Oooh imagine with jam. Or even cheese and jam. I love that combo."
