Hull KR open contract talks with Tony Smith as a fresh deal appears likely

Hull KR have opened talks with Tony Smith over a new deal. Rugby League Live understands Smith, whose contract runs out at the end of the season, has entered negotiations with the Rovers hierarchy over an extension to his contract.

It's believed that talks have remained relaxed throughout the process, but sources have indicated that Smith appears likely to pen a 12-month extension to his existing deal which will keep him at the club until the end of the 2023 season.

The former Leeds Rhinos and Warrington Wolves boss has been a splendid job since arriving at Sewell Group Craven Park, taking Rovers from relegation contenders to play-off semi-finalists in just over two years.

The Robins have now reached another semi-final via the Challenge Cup and are one win away from a major final appearance. Since his arrival, Smith has overseen a change in recruitment policy that has seen the club put focus into younger talent and it has reaped its rewards. The likes of Elliot Minchella, Jez Litten, Rowan Milnes and Luis Johnson have all emerged since joining the club and Mikey Lewis has developed wonderfully under Smith's watch.

News of an extension is undoubtedly a timely boost ahead of the Hull derby later this week and will also strengthen the club's position in the recruitment market, which opens on May 1st. It has been seen as a key priority to secure Smith's future in order to provide clarity for potential targets, as well as players currently off-contract with the club.

Smith has frequently expressed his happiness in the Rovers role and stated that he had rediscovered his love for coaching since joining the club in an interview
