Huge spring tides cause flooding in Cardiff, Newport and on rivers and the coast - live updates

Flood warnings and alerts are in force for large parts of the Welsh coast on Tuesday (March 12), with “significant” spring tides forecast. Some flooding of low-lying land and roads is "expected", with people urged to beware of dangerous waves and sea spray.

There is flooding in Cardiff Bay with an alert in place there until Wednesday evening "due to the predicted levels for the next high tides". Pictures from the area show flooding in Adventurers Quay.

Newport Bus also warned passengers that services were affected because of flooding at Docks way railway underpass and one of the main routes into Bristol is also flooded near the Clifton Suspension Bridge.

The high tide is expected at 11.45am today on Anglesey, with the tide level anticipated to reach 4.6 metres above "Ordnance Datum" - or the average sea level height - at Red Wharf Bay.

.Natural Resources Wales has got 13 flood warnings and 11 flood alerts in place, mainly around coastal areas where high tides combine with recent rainfall. Read more about the alerts here.

Heavy rain has also been falling in the area this morning. The Met Office forecast for Wales today says: "A wet start to the day with outbreaks of rain and brisk winds across the country. The rain heavy at times over the hills. Slowly becoming drier through the afternoon, though further spells of rain are still possible."
