Huge blow: Man Utd dealt a late setback ahead of Chelsea, Rangnick will be frustrated - opinion

Manchester United will host Chelsea at Old Trafford this evening, and Ralf Rangnick has been dealt some late fitness issues ahead of the game.

The Red Devils boss took to his pre-match press conference to confirm that Jadon Sancho will not be available for selection after suffering from tonsillitis this week.

Rangnick told the press (via Manchester Evening News);

“Jadon is ill — he has had tonsillitis since yesterday [Tuesday]. He couldn’t train today and won’t be available tomorrow.”

Rangnick now has six first-team players out with injury or illness issues, as Sancho is accompanied by Harry Maguire, Fred, Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani and Luke Shaw who are all out with injury issues.

Pogba and Shaw are out for the season as it stands and the Manchester United captain will reportedly miss out on the remaining games following a knee injury, however Cavani, Sancho and Fred are all due to return in Monday’s game against Brentford.

Losing the 22-year-old winger this evening against such challenging opponents will be a huge blow for Rangnick who has relied upon Sancho this season – he has made 38 appearances in his first campaign at the club, scoring five goals and contributing three assists so far.

United will likely need to lean upon Marcus Rashford and Anthony Elanga this evening to cause problems for Thomas Tuchel’s back-line, and with the former struggling to find a run of good form and performances, it could be a good opportunity to prove the doubters wrong against Chelsea.

The German coach’s frustration with mounting injuries will certainly be heightened at this point of the season, especially as it is now becoming near impossible for his team to qualify for Champions League football next season.
