Huddersfield Town players given unique extra motivation to claim victory at Preston North End

When there has been such a long stretch of time since a side last won at a certain ground, we believe it is customary to point out a couple of notable and suitably old-feeling cultural landmarks from the time.

Here we go then...the last time Huddersfield Town won away to Preston North End was the day Sesame Street first aired in the United States, and the number one single in the UK charts was The Archies’ ‘Sugar, Sugar’.

So no wonder Terriers captain Jonathan Hogg had a hard time remembering when his side last won at Deepdale: it was over 19 years before he was even born.

Preston have been a pretty consistent thorn in Town’s side over the past two seasons, with Town taking just a single point from their four games against them after returning to the Championship in 2019.

That poor recent record was put to bed in rather scrappy fashion as a Sepp Van Den Berg own goal gave Carlos Corberan’s side their first win of the season at the John Smith’s Stadium in August.

Since then Town have gone from strength to strength and come into Wednesday’s 7:45pm kick off hoping to extend their unbeaten run to 13 games in all competitions.

After a difficult start to the season under Frankie McAvoy, Preston have become much more resilient since Ryan Lowe arrived at the beginning of December, losing just one of his nine Championship games in charge.

Hogg acknowledged that Town are therefore expecting a tough test, saying: “I can’t remember the last time we went there and we’ve come away with three points, to be honest with you…”
