Huddersfield Town linked with transfer move for versatile Championship attacker Connor Mahoney

Huddersfield Town have been linked with a transfer move for versatile free agent Connor Mahoney, who has just been released by Championship rivals Millwall.

The Terriers are in the market for new attacking talents to add both quality and depth to Carlos Corberan’s squad in the final third, and journalist Alan Nixon claims that Town are set to move for Mahoney to help fill that need.

The 25 year old is capable of playing on either flank or in attacking midfield but found his opportunities limited at The Den over the past couple of seasons, making just 22 Championship appearances since the beginning of the 2020/21 season.

Mahoney is something of a set piece specialist, which may be particularly appealing to a side who thrived off dead balls last season. Town have just Sorba Thomas to take them next season after losing Danel Sinani as an alternative after his loan from Norwich City came to an end.

A Blackburn native, Mahoney started his senior career at nearby Accrington Stanley as a 16 year old in 2013 before moving to his hometown club later that year. He spent four years with Rovers before getting a move to Premier League Bournemouth in 2017.

The Cherries gave him just two League Cup outings before sending him out on loan to Barnsley and Birmingham City, where he won the club’s young player of the season award in 2019 before being sold to Millwall for a reported £1.1m fee.

Town have made just one signing so far this summer, with academy graduate Will Boyle returning to the club after a five-and-a-half year stint at Cheltenham Town.
