How to pronounce Bruno Fernandes' name as Manchester United star explains all

It turns out fans and media have been getting Bruno Fernandes’ name completely wrong.

The Manchester United man has become one of the Premier League's biggest draws since arriving from Portuguese giants Sporting in 2020. That should have been long enough to pronounce his name properly.

But not so according to the man himself, who has cleared up any confusion. The 30-year-old has a couple of middle names, Miguel and Borges, with Borges and Fernandes being paternal family names, which seems straightforward enough.

Of course, it isn’t feasible to regularly refer to all four of his names. It’s the pronunciation of those names which has been incorrect among English speakers. In a Premier League social media clip featuring players saying their names, Fernandes pronounces it: "Brun Mig-el Borj Fer-nanj".

Compatriot Diogo Jota of Liverpool addressed the same issue in an interview last year. He said: “I have this discussion often with the English guys, [it's] Brun Fer-nanj.”

How his name is pronounced will not be a priority for Fernandes’ as he strives to help United recover from a slow start to the Premier League season following the international break. Anything less than three points against Southampton on Saturday will heighten scrutiny on Erik ten Hag, who has been on the receiving end of fresh criticism from Cristiano Ronaldo. He has slammed the head coach for suggesting United are not ready to challenge for the Premier League title.
