How the Irish fared in the January sales

The dust has settled on another January window - and there was a fair bit of moving and shaking involving Irish players.

The most eye-catching transfer involved Matt Doherty, who has left Tottenham Hotspur for Atletico Madrid.

It's a fascinating switch for the 31-year-old Dubliner. Atletico's powers have dwindled in the last two years - they are currently fourth in La Liga and finished bottom of their Champions League group - but the prospect of working with Diego Simeone remains a tantalising one.

Doherty has only played 44 Premier League games for Spurs since joining from Wolves in 2020. He needs a consistent run at a high level; hopefully he'll get it in Spain.

The same could be said of Michael Obafemi. The talented attacker has been angling for a move from Swansea City to Burnley since the summer. He got his wish at the tail end of the window and with the Clarets looking a certainty to go up from the Championship this year, Obafemi could be operating in the Premier League again by August.

It'll be down to how well he applies himself. Obafemi has gone on loan for the rest of the season with a view to a permanent transfer in the summer. His ability is not in question, but Obafemi now needs to show how good he is on a regular basis.
