How Sheffield Wednesday’s average attendance this season compares to recent seasons

Sheffield Wednesday are having a successful season under the management of Darren Moore and are currently looking towards the play-offsm as they occupy fourth place in the league.

Hillsborough has a capacity of 39,732 though Wednesday haven’t been attracting those crowds for a while now.

However, here we are going to be taking a look at how the Owls average attendance has been this season in comparison to recent seasons using Transfermarkt.

The average attendance for Wednesday this year is 21,973 which is fairly high.

It blows last year out of the water for obvious reasons because of the pandemic which meant no fans could attend Hillsborough to watch games last season.

However, what’s interesting is that this season their average attendance has been higher than it was in the 2019/20 season when they were in the Championship as that averaged at 18,573 making it quite a significant difference.

Part of this could be down to fans wanting to return to football following the pandemic after being unable to attend for so long.

However, another factor in this could be the difference in success levels.

Although they are competing in a lower league this season, Sheffield Wednesday have been able to experience success and as it stands they have currently won 23 of their 45 games this season.

In the 2019/20 season, however, the side finished 16th in the league and won only 15 of their 46 games.

Despite this season’s average attendance being high especially in comparison to the two previous seasons, for Sheffield Wednesday in terms of their own attendance history it is still falling short.

In the 2018/19 season they averaged 23,867 fans, in the 2017/18 season they averaged 25,995 and in the 2016/17 season 27,129.

In the 2016/17 season
