How Paul Scholes thinks Erik ten Hag will get the best out of Casemiro at Manchester United

Paul Scholes says Casemiro needs support in central midfield if he's to operate to the best of his ability at Manchester United.

The Brazilian started his second game since arriving in the 3-2 Europa League win over Omonia Nicosia on Thursday. It’s been a slow start for the five-time Champions League winner, whose four Premier League appearances have all come from the bench.

He is yet to instil himself as the presence United had hoped for in the centre of the park and was largely subdued in the match in Cyprus. Scholes believes he needs runners around him so he can operate as he did at Real Madrid when playing alongside Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.

Speaking on BT Sport, Scholes said: “There’s a lot of goals in this team, I do worry what’s behind it - they’re far too open at times against a team who you wouldn’t expect to score two goals against them.

“Every time they went forward, United looked open. I think they’ve got to get that midfield partnership right. Casemiro brings control, composure to the midfield but he needs legs around him.

“He had that at Real Madrid, if he’s to play against Everton, he needs players around him to protect him.” United travel to Goodison Park for a 7pm kick-off on Sunday following last weekend’s 6-3 loss to Manchester City.

Casemiro could potentially make his full league debut for Erik ten Hag on Merseyside, where a win could take United into the top four if results go their way.
