How Oxford United’s average attendance this season compares to recent seasons

Oxford United’s play-off bid has fallen just short in 2021/22.

After the U’s 2-1 defeat to Rotherham United last night, the club sit 8th in the League One standings, but five points off the play-off places with just one game remaining.

In order to compare attendances with this season, it’s first important to understand that the average attendance at the Kassam Stadium has been 8,432 per match.

Looking back, this is actually the largest average attendance that Oxford United have registered in the last six seasons.

Taking 2020/21 away due to not having fans at games, this season’s number is larger than 2019/20 which averaged 7,636.

Oxford United’s support has stayed fairly consistent in recent years, meaning that in 2018/19 (7,315) and 2017/18 (7,376) the average attendance also fell short of what it has been this campaign.

The 2016/17 season – the first season for the club back in League One following their League Two promotion – is the year that came closest to this campaign’s average crowd.

It still fell short though, with the U’s averaging just shy of this year’s crowd at 8,297.
