How much money Manchester United will lose if they miss Champions League qualification

Manchester United could be hit hard financially if they fail to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

United's hopes of securing a top four finish look to be all-but over following their dismal 1-0 defeat at ate Everton on Saturday. With Tottenham going on to comprehensively beat Aston Villa 4-0 later in the day, United now find themselves six points off fourth with just seven games remaining in the season.

Having held ambitions in pre-season of mounting a title challenge, the failure to even qualify for next season’s Champions League comes as a huge blow for United. And it could have a damaging effect on their finances.

According to The Mirror, United stand to miss out on millions of pounds in bonuses from sponsors should they miss out on a top four finish this season. Principal partner Team Viewer are just one of those offering performance-related incentives that the club look set to fall short on.

The German tech company replaced Chevrolet as United’s front-of-shirt sponsor last year, in a five-year deal reportedly worth around £235million. The club, though, stand to miss out on £47million from the bonuses built into the contract.

Kit suppliers Adidas are also said to have a Champions League clause written into their deal with United. Their 10-year agreement, which was reached back in 2014, was reportedly worth a maximum of £750million — although that figure was dependant on United retaining a seat at Europe’s top table.

The club have already had to dispense of one of their main sponsors this season. United cancelled their association with Russian state airline Aeroflot following the invasion of Ukraine.
