How much does Luton Town’s squad cost compare to all other Championship sides?

Luton Town are proving to the footballing world that finances do not have to dictate the degree of success that clubs can have in the Championship. 

The Hatters, who are currently fourth in the second-tier standings, holding a six-point advantage over Millwall in seventh, have enjoyed an excellent campaign operating with the lowest budget in the entire division. 

The fact that Nathan Jones’ side are currently looking to cement their position in the top-six, and are above the likes of Middlesbrough, West Brom and Sheffield United, is a massive achievement and just goes to show exactly how far intelligent recruitment from both a playing and non-playing perspective can go. 

Looking at another metric that draws praise to the work that Jones and Co. are doing at Luton this season are the findings from football finance expert Kieran Maguire who has delved into the cost of Championship squads. 

Maguire’s findings show that Luton possess a squad that has cost £3.4 million, which is a terrific achievement in itself, with Blackpool’s £1.4 million the only club that have compiled a cheaper squad. 

This is an indication of just how clever they have been in the transfer market, with their recent decision to take a more data-orientated approach certainly paying dividends. 

The fact that the likes of Reece Burke, Kal Naismith and Jordan Clark arrived at Kenilworth Road on free deals acts as yet another reminder of the intelligence levels within the recruiting department at the Championship outfit.
