How Manchester United transfer spending compares to Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool

Manchester United are among the biggest spenders in the Premier League but plenty of their rivals have been far more active throughout the transfer window.

The Reds’ new recruits - Andre Onana, Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund - have arrived at Old Trafford for a total of around £180m, with more potentially on the way before September 1. Meanwhile, Fred, Anthony Elanga and Alex Telles have headed for the exit door as the club looks to balance the books, putting United’s net spend in the region of £138m.

In a summer that has seen the British transfer record broken twice in quick succession, United fans will have been keeping a close eye on the deals being completed across the top-flight. Here’s how United’s spending stacks up against the other sides looking to challenge for a top four place, as well the other European spots.

Chelsea are the club that have captured the most headlines during the summer months. Mauricio Pochettino has overhauled his squad at Stamford Bridge, bringing in nine players, including Moises Caicedo for a fee rising to a possible £115m. The west London club’s outlay on signings is in excess of £350m, with Romeo Lavia, Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku also commanding significant fees.

Despite being the Premier League’s leading spenders this summer, they have recouped a large chunk of that sum through player sales. Selling Mount, Kai Havertz and Mateo Kovacic to their rivals, as well as plenty of other deals, means Chelsea have spent around £120m overall.
