How Manchester United should line up vs Lyon in huge Europa League fixture
Manchester United are set for one of their most important games in years.
A slender first-leg lead was snatched from them with the final kick of the game in Lyon last week, with Andre Onana's second blunder of the game allowing Rayan Cherki to level the scores at the halfway point in the Europa League quarter-final tie.
Onana was rested for the Premier League clash with Newcastle on Sunday but Altay Bayindir made a mess of his audition to start the second meeting with Lyon. The Turkey international was culpable for Newcastle's fourth goal of the game as United lost 4-1 at St James' Park.
Regarding the team news, head coach Ruben Amorim has confirmed Onana will return and start in goal. Elsewhere, Joshua Zirkzee will miss the remainder of the season through injury and the contest has come too soon for Matthijs de Ligt to return.
Here's how our writers think United should line up at Old Trafford tonight:
It feels inevitable that Amorim will pick the same team that started the first leg and United performed quite well in Lyon. The line-up was still overloaded with defensive-minded players and, on current form, Manuel Ugarte has been so poor that Casemiro deserves to start ahead of him.
Bruno Fernandes was playing so brilliantly in midfield it seemed certain he would remain there. He should move back there next to Casemiro, with Kobbie Mainoo added to a potentially vibrant playmaking duo with Alejandro Garnacho.
United have little choice but to start Rasmus Hojlund as he is the only senior striker available.
This is the team we would pick rather than the one we expect Amorim to pick, so I could opt for a different goalkeeper. Onana is clearly the right call, however, even if he is under huge pressure to perform.
