How Manchester City Women players fared in group game 1 at the World Cup

Every team has now played at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand and there has been plenty of Manchester City representation.

In total, 14 members of Gareth Taylor's side have made the journey down under, with six selected in Sarina Wiegman’s squad.

There are also players representing hosts Australia, The Netherlands, Japan, Jamaica, Sweden and Norway.

Now each nation has got their campaign underway, we have a look at how all 14 Citizens got on in their respective World Cup openers.

England

England began their World Cup pursuit with an unconvincing 1-0 win over Haiti, thanks to former City star Georgia Stanway’s first-half penalty.

From the current Manchester City crop, Alex Greenwood, Chloe Kelly and Lauren Hemp all started, with Greenwood and Kelly playing a full 90 minutes and Hemp replaced by Lauren James shortly after the hour mark.

Ellie Roebuck, Esme Morgan and Laura Coombs remained on the bench and will hope to feature in Friday’s crucial clash with Denmark in Sydney.

Netherlands

The Netherlands also got underway with a 1-0 win, defeating Portugal after defender Stefanie van der Gragt’s header across goal after 13 minutes.

New signing Jill Roord played a full 90 minutes in the heart of the Dutch midfield, putting in an assured display that will have pleased Manchester City fans, while Kerstin Casparij got onto the field in the dying seconds to mark her World Cup debut.

They will both be looking to be involved again on Thursday, for the crunch clash against the USA, in a repeat of the 2019 final.
