How Arsenal, Chelsea and Man United tried to sign Michael Owen before Liverpool transfer
Arsenal, Chelsea and Man United all made their own moves back in 1991 to try and poach Michael Owen under Liverpool's noses. The England icon was picked up by the Reds' academy set-up in 1997 before progressing through the ranks.
Owen took little time to settle in the youth set-up before he was chucked into the first-team fray in Anfield. He attained a total of 205 goal contributions across his 13-year stay in Merseyside where he won five trophies and two golden boot awards. In 2004, he switched to Real Madrid, then moved on to Newcastle, Man United and Stoke respectively before hanging up his boots In 2013. But the period back in the early '90s will be seen as one that both Arsenal and Chelsea regretted most for not being able to land the Premier League icon.
By his own admission, things could have been so different if one of the London clubs would have been successful in convincing Gemma Owen's Dad to snub the Liverpool and United axis in favour of sealing a move to the attractive capital of England. That did not happen and Owen himself opened up about what happened in an upcoming BT Sports podcast which is set to be released on September 2 as part of a new series labelled 'The Premier League Storybook with Jake Humphrey.'
