Horror fans issue warning as one of 2023's biggest films added to Netflix

Netflix subscribers have issued a warning as one of the year's biggest horror films was added to the streaming service.

Evil Dead Rise, which was initially released in cinemas in April, landed on Netflix on Thursday (September 21). It's the fifth installment of the Evil Dead franchise, produced by Sam Raimi and directed by Lee Cronin.

The film follows a family who discover a book hidden underneath their apartment building in Los Angeles. They are then targeted by a supernatural entity that is determined to destroy anything that crosses its path.

It stars Lily Sullivan, Alyssa Sutherland, Morgan Davies, Gabrielle Echols and Nell Fisher. The film secured a Rotten Tomatoes score of 84 per cent and earned 6.6 out of 10 on IMDb. Benjamin Lee of The Guardian said: "Evil Dead Rise is a decent little splatter movie which contains just about enough to justify the franchise resurrection although perhaps not quite enough to demand that much more of it."

The Independent's critic Clarisse Loughrey meanwhile called it a “diabolical concoction, mindful of its cinematic legacy yet happy to override the rules in any way it sees fit”.

Horror fans were delighted to learn the film had been added to Netflix - but one viewer issued a warning. Taking to Twitter, @SH4RP0BJECT5 celebrated: "Everybody cheer evil dead rise on Netflix" while @crumlingothic_ wrote: "Evil Dead Rise is on Netflix now let's goooo".

@martinstiff added: "Oh hey, Evil Dead Rise is on Netflix already! I caught it at the cinema - it’s an absolute gem." while @jenlikemagic said: "Evil Dead Rise is finally on Netflix, time to re-live my nightmares".
