Horrified neighbours ‘jumped out of bed’ after hearing the sudden sound of gunshots in the street

Residents in a Harpurhey street woke this morning to the shocking news of gunshots fired metres from their homes. People living in homes on Evanton Walk rose this morning to a police scene and CSI hard at work on their doorstep following a shooting at around 2am (September 23).

No injuries have been reported by police, but police dogs and a Tactical Assist Unit came to do a sweep of the house targeted in the incident. Many in the area heard shots in the middle of the night but woke to see no trace of a crime shortly before police turned up.

“It was really loud [the gun shot],” one resident said.

“It was like one of those really loud fireworks, no smoke though. I jumped up in the night but didn’t see anyone.

“About two minutes later the police came. People are there late at night quite a lot so it’s not a surprise it happened there.

“This is not an area you expect that sort of thing to happen. But if it were to happen anywhere, it would be there.”

Another resident across the street from the incident woke to the scene of police tape and Crime Scene Investigators. The cordon was in place for almost 12 hours.

“I’ve been told there were shots fired. We’re not sure what happened exactly but something has gone on with this as forensics are here. At 6am forensics teams were here when I woke up.”

Others in the area told the Manchester Evening News that the incident was “terrible” and “frightening”. They went on to say “It must be something bad for them to be using guns”.

"It’s a bit dangerous around here,” another resident said. “I’ve never heard of that before, but it’s normal really”.
