Horizon Forbidden West: Third game all but confirmed by creative director

Horizon Forbidden West has been one of the most critically successful games of the year so far, even if its release has been somewhat overshadowed by the huge launch of Elden Ring.

Guerrilla Games’ latest release remains one of the highest-reviewed game releases of 2022 and currently has a Metacritic score of 88 from 122 reviews, while it also has a user score of 8 from 8,425 ratings.

That is a majorly successful launch for the developers, and it now appears as though we could well be getting a trilogy.

We wrote last week that a leaker had suggested there could be a third game on the way, with Guerrilla believing that they have a trilogy on their hands.

Now, there is a mild spoiler warning here as we move forward just in case you haven’t actually finished Forbidden West yet.

Even still, if you have completed the game, you’ll be aware that the storyline doesn’t exactly end completely cleanly.

Guerrilla Games have again set the stage for another game, much like they did at the end of Zero Dawn.

Aloy could end up trying to stop the world from ending in the third game, and that has now essentially been confirmed.

Mathijs De Jong is the creative director for Forbidden West and he has been speaking to VG247, confirming that the intention was to leave breadcrumbs for a third game.

He said: “Horizon is really about mystery; each of our stories has been about uncovering mysteries in both the old world and the present day, when the game takes place.

“Indeed, there is plenty of backstory that we can tap into to develop new storylines and create new mysteries from what we’ve already established.

“And, indeed, this game ends with another big cliffhanger, where we’re setting up some things for the next game once again.”
