'Hopeless' - Diogo Dalot names the Manchester United manager who put him at his lowest point

Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot 'felt hopeless' at the end of Ralf Rangnick's time as interim manager in 2021/22, which represented his lowest point at the club.

Jose Mourinho was responsible for signing Dalot from Porto in 2018. The left-back spent the 2020/21 campaign on loan with AC Milan to gain regular first-team football and began to reap the rewards of that spell away when playing for United again in the following season.

However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked during that miserable season and Rangnick, who failed to improve results, was named as his successor on an interim basis. United recorded their lowest points total in a Premier League season with Rangnick in charge and Dalot has admitted that was a torrid time for the dressing room.

"I came back more confident [from AC Milan] but only started to play more when Ralf Rangnick arrived," said Dalot in a reflective interview with FourFourTwo.

"The end of that season, when we finished badly, was my lowest point as a United player and we felt a bit hopeless. When Erik ten Hag arrived, things improved and I continued to play.

"Off the field, I was settled in Manchester after returning from Milan: my first year in 2018 had not been easy because the weather was so different to Portugal. That was a bit of a shock, as life there is usually outside.I was away from friends too, so I had to build new relationships and meet new people, which takes time.

"But now I have good friends here – from the team, I’m friends with Antony, Casemiro, Licha [Lisandro Martinez] and Bruno, plus David de Gea when he was here.”
