Homes without water and road shut after main bursts

Some homes are without water and a stretch of road in Tameside is closed this afternoon due to a burst main. An emergency closure is in place on High Street, Stalybridge whilst United Utilities investigate and repair the water leak.

The road is currently closed to all traffic while it is dug up to assess the damage caused. Some homes in the surrounding area may have no water or low water pressure, the water company has warned.

People have been urged to avoid the area if possible and take an alternative route by the Tameside Council Highways team. There is a diversion route in place.

A statement posted by United Utilities at 3.51am said: “Our team are making progress and our top priority is getting things back to normal.

“Repairs to our network can be harder to fix than we first thought, and take longer than we hoped to complete. Thanks for your understanding and sorry for the inconvenience.

“We’ll provide you with an update once we have one from the team onsite.”

A Tweet posted by the Tameside Council Highways team reads: “Emergency Closure on High Street, Stalybridge whilst United Utilities investigate and repair an emergency water leak. Please avoid the area if possible and take alternative route. There is a diversion route in place.”
