Home semi-final blow: Stormers finish 3rd on URC log after Ulster's win over Edinburgh

The Stormers will finish the URC regular season in third position despite their 38-22 win over Benetton in Stellenbosch on Friday night.

The defending champions had temporarily moved into second spot on the URC standings after their bonus point win at the Danie Craven Stadium.

However, Ulster's 28-14 win over Edinburgh in Belfast late on Friday night saw them pip the Stormers to second spot.

Both Ulster and the Stormers finish on 68 points but the Irish side take second position because they won one more game (13) than the Stormers (12).

This is significant as it means the Stormers will potentially miss out on the home semi-final. If top-of-the table Leinster and Ulster both win their home quarter-finals, then the Stormers will play away from home if they win their quarter-final.

Unbeaten Leinster, who take on the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, are already secured of top spot and will be heavy favourites to beat whoever they play in the quarter-finals.

The Stormers were in second position for large parts of the season, but will rue losing losing 26-24 to Munster in Cape Town last weekend.

Despite the disappointment of losing second spot, the Stormers at least had reason to celebrate on Friday night when they were awarded with the South African Shield for the second consecutive year.
