Holidaymakers heading to Spain issued warning amid heavy rain

Holidaymakers are being warned of extreme weather conditions could delay flights to Spain.

The country's meteorological office (AEMET) placed certain areas under a yellow warning for heavy rain and storms. Among the parts of the country affected include Andalusia, Alicante, Barcelona, Ibiza, Madrid and Valencia.

Over the past week, heavy rain has battered Spain's Mediterranean cost with some areas seeing more rainfall in a day than they normally would see in a month. The most severely affected region is Murcia where cars have been spotted being swept down streets, Birmingham Live reports.

Meanwhile Vega del Segura and Campo de Cartagena and Mazarrón - both in Murcia - are currently under orange warnings for rain. Other areas have been hit by severe thunderstorms and hailstorms, such as Catalonia, a region which had been experiencing the worst drought in a hundred years so far.

Since Thursday, Madrid's conditions had been so bad that commuters were forced to dodge water pouring into metro stations while drivers had to navigate flooded highways. Water also leaked through the ceiling of Madrid Airport and flooded runways.

Heavy rainfall could lead to flight and train disruption so be sure to give yourself extra time if you are travelling in the affected areas.
