History-making Lisa O'Rourke & Amy Broadhurst win gold at world championships
Amy Broadhurst and Lisa O'Rourke wrote their names into the history books of Irish boxing as the two fighters secured gold medals at the Women’s World Championships in Istanbul.
Only three Irish boxers have secured similar at the boxing Worlds, and now Broadhurst and O’Rourke join Katie Taylor, Kellie Harrington and Michael Conlan in an elite club of five.
Dundalk boxer Broadhurst was first of the Irish in the ring at the presitigious Turkey tournament and was followed into the ring by Castlerea native O’Rourke who matched her team-mate with a remarkable gold medal winning performance.
Back to the arena the day after winning their respective semi-finals on Wednesday, Broadhurst was first up in her light welterweight division decider as she took on Algeria’s Imane Khelif.
Despite the massive 13cm height difference between the two boxers, Broadhurst was immediately effective against her rangey opponent.
