Hertha Berlin chief explains why they wanted Jonjoe Kenny, as Everton old boy signs with next club

Jonjoe Kenny is officially returning to the Bundesliga after the Everton defender’s move to Hertha Berlin was confirmed.

Kenny is leaving Everton as a free agent at the end of his contract this month. After previously enjoying a loan spell with Schalke in the 2019-20 season, the right-back is heading back to Germany.

He was recently revealed to be of interest to Hertha Berlin ahead of the new season. Now, the Bundesliga club – who finished 16th last season but won the relegation play-off to maintain top-flight status – have confirmed his arrival.

Kenny has signed a contract until 2025 with his new employers.

He told their club website: “The club made it clear how much they wanted me.

“I’m pleased to be here. I’m looking forward to playing for this club, seeing the fans and moving to this city.”

Hertha’s sporting director, Fredi Bobic, added: “Jonjoe is a player that will bring some fresh impetus and pace into our game.

“He’s gained experience in both the Premier League and the Bundesliga, plus he still has the potential to develop further aged just 25.

“We could sense how excited he was to join Hertha BSC during our discussions.”

They will be the sixth club he has represented in his career, but only the second after Everton to have owned him.

Kenny previously built up experience on loan at Wigan Athletic, Oxford United, Schalke and Celtic. Back with his former parent club, he amassed a total of 69 appearances. He never scored for them, but provided six assists.
