Heavy traffic on M60 as stretches of motorway left flooded in torrential rain

Some stretches of the M60 motorway have been left flooded this morning in the torrential rain.

According to the North West Motorway Police, highways officers are currently responding to reports of flooding on two stretches of the anticlockwise carriageway. One is from junction 17 to junction 16 near Prestwich.

A lane was closed off between these junctions earlier this morning due to the flooding, according to traffic alert service Inrix. The other report of flooding is at junction 25 to junction 24 near Stockport.

Traffic is heavy on the motorway as motorists slow down in the tough driving conditions, with drivers urged to keep a safe distance from cars in front and use headlights in the rain. Stagecoach have also warned that some bus services may be delayed today amid the downpours.

In a post on X, the bus operator said: "All Stagecoach services. Please be aware that today from midday there is a severe weather rain warning.

"Services will be possible delayed due to drivers driving more cautious. Sorry if this may affect your journey with us today."

A Met Office amber rain warning - which covers all of our region, as well as parts of Lancashire, Merseyside, Cheshire and north Wales - comes into place at 12pm today. It will last until 12pm tomorrow with heavy downpours expected for most of that time.
