Heatwave declared 'national emergency' as rail passengers are told not to travel - live updates

Wales is set to bask in more glorious sunshine across the weekend - before the country gets even hotter as we head into Monday and Tuesday. The latest weather maps show that the UK could experience temperatures of 40°C for the first time ever in the coming days.

In Wales, temperatures could reach as high as 37°C in parts. Wales is subject to an amber warning for extreme heat for large parts on Sunday, while the warning covers the whole of the country for Monday and Tuesday. Meanwhile, parts of England are subject to a red warning for extreme heat on Monday and Tuesday - the first time such a warning has ever been issued by the Met Office in the UK.

As for Saturday, everywhere in Wales is expected to see bright sunshine throughout the day and temperatures that would normally be considered high - with Cardiff reaching a high of around 25°C. Travel disruption is expected across Wales in the coming days, while the Welsh Government is urging people to take extra precautions and to plan ahead to keep themselves and others safe.

Deputy chief medical officer, Chris Jones, said: “Extreme heat warnings are not issued lightly by the Met Office and the potential health risks need to be taken seriously. Very high temperatures can be dangerous for everyone but elderly people, children, those with chronic health problems and vulnerable people who may struggle to keep cool are at a higher risk.”
