‘He won’t mind me saying this’ - Troy Deeney makes strong claim about Man United star he knows
Troy Deeney believes Jonny Evans still being at Manchester United sums up how bad the club's recruitment has been over recent years.
Evans, who turns 37 in early January, re-joined United before the start of last season. He was initially on a short-term deal after training with the team to start pre-season following his release from Leicester City.
That soon became a deal until the end of that campaign, and the defender signed another one-year extension before this season began. Evans has played 42 times since returning to United, notably starting Ruben Amorim's first match in charge against Ipswich Town.
Speaking about who the new head coach should build the team around after their 4-3 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in their League Cup quarter-finals, Deeney told CBS Sports Golazo Network: "You'd probably have to say [Manuel] Ugarte now because he knows the system, knows what it's about; probably say [Amad] Diallo because he's a young player; there's loads of potential there. The rest? We'll wait and see.
"You should normally add them [Amad and Ugarte] in [to an already good team], but I just think what can put it into a great perspective is - and he won't mind me saying this, because I know him - Jonny Evans at 37 years old should not be in that Man United team. But he is; he's played games, he's on the bench, he's an integral part of what they do.
"That sums up just how bad the recruitment has been over the last three or four years that Johnny Evans is still there and is available to play. He got relegated with Leicester not too long ago, and now he's at a Man United team, part of the rebuild.
"It just always feels like they're trying to hang on just that little bit of what Sir Alex [Ferguson] did. Football's moved
