"He will be a genuine superstar" - talkSPORT reporter raves over 6 ft 3 Southampton target

Southampton target Gavin Bazunu is set to become a future “superstar”, according to talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook.

The Manchester City shot-stopper is yet to play in the Premier League, but that could be about to change.

The 20-year-old spent last season on loan at Portsmouth in League One, and made 46 appearances across all competitions.

Despite playing in the third tier, his performances caught the eye, and Southampton have identified him as a potential replacement for Fraser Forster, who will be moving to Tottenham on a free transfer at the start of July.

The Athletic have reported that the Saints are closing in on securing Bazunu’s services in a deal that will cost over £10m once add-ons are taken into account.

The 6 foot 3 goalkeeper only turned 20 in February, but he is already into double figures for international caps, and Crook has backed him to flourish at St Mary’s, if the deal goes through.

Crook told GIVEMESPORT: “He’s only 20 years of age, it would have been easy to take the money at Man City and maybe go out on loan again. But he’s backed himself, and people who know a lot more about goalkeeping than me tell me he is the real deal. He will be a genuine superstar, which is why Man City are insistent on quite a hefty buy-back option. It’ll be a similar deal to the one Southampton struck with Tino Livramento and Chelsea last summer.”

Livramento was relatively unheard of before he arrived at St Mary’s last summer, but people know about him now.

The teenager went straight into Ralph Hasenhuttl’s starting line-up and made 28 top-flight appearances before suffering a serious knee injury in April.
