'He was in his element': Cape Town's much-loved biker Brad Bodsworth dies on track at Killarney
What was meant to be a fantastic race day at Killarney Raceway on Saturday ended in tragedy when biker Brad Bodsworth died in a superbike race.
During the second SuperBike race of the day at the recent Power Series in Cape Town on 1 February, the Somerset West biker collided with another rider, Jason Linaker, on track. The horrific crash happened in front of hundreds of spectators at the event, including close family and friends of both riders.
Bodsworth succumbed to his injuries, sustained in the high-speed crash on the track with his Aprilia motorcycle, while Linaker is in a serious condition in hospital.
The tragic incident is now under investigation by the South African Police Services.
Killarney International Raceway confirmed his death in a social media post on Monday, 3 February.
Motorsport SA (MSA) CEO Vic Maharaj said: "This is a devastating loss for the motorsport community.
"We extend our deepest sympathies to Brad's mother, Lise, his life partner, Lauren, and their three children, as well as to all the members of the racing community this tragic incident has touched.
"Our thoughts are also with Jason Linaker, who also sustained multiple injuries during the incident."
Maharaj told News24 Motoring that the tragic occurred just before 17:00 during the Superbike race. The event was immediately stopped. According to Maharaj, the incident is under police investigation.
"At this stage, we cannot divulge any further details that could prejudice or compromise the outcome of the investigation.
"MSA is committed to assisting the investigation to determine the exact sequence of events that led to this fatal accident. Further updates will be communicated as more information becomes available," he said.
