'He’s not managed him correctly' - Erik ten Hag criticised over Manchester United player's injury

Former defender Richard Dunne has criticised Erik ten Hag's management of Luke Shaw after a long spell out injured.

Shaw missed more than three months of football for Manchester United after picking up a muscular injury in the 2-0 defeat at Tottenham in August. The left-back returned to start in the 3-0 win at Everton at the end of November and has started every game since.

Those appearances amounted to 468 minutes in the space of just 17 days up until the point in which he was forced off against Bayern Munich on Tuesday. Shaw was spotted holding his hamstring towards the end of the first-half and limped down the tunnel before being replaced by Sergio Reguilon.

"You talk about the injuries and Luke Shaw has been out for three months," Dunne told Virgin Media Sport. "He comes back and the manager plays him in five games in 15 or 16 days and he’s injured again because he’s not managed him correctly, you need to take him out and give him a rest."

Shaw is now a major doubt for Sunday's trip to Anfield where they face Liverpool. Ten Hag's side were thumped 7-0 in this fixture last season and could go to Merseyside without three of their best players.

As well as Shaw, Harry Maguire could be unavailable after also picking up a muscular issue against Bayern. The 30-year-old received on-pitch treatment after holding his groin and was replaced by Jonny Evans.

Bruno Fernandes will definitely be absent, having picked up his fifth Premier League booking of the campaign during last weekend's humbling 3-0 defeat at home to Bournemouth.
