'He's going to be a meme' - Man United fans react to Darwin Nunez's start to life at Liverpool

Earlier in the transfer window, Manchester United were linked with Darwin Nunez as a back-up and then eventual replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo. However, with a price tag of £85m, a move to Old Trafford never materialised for the Uruguayan forward.

Nunez instead moved to Liverpool where he replaced Sadio Mane who has moved to Bayern Munich. However, Nunez has not enjoyed a great start to life at Anfield.

During Liverpool's 4-0 loss to United, Nunez missed his side's best chance of the second half by skying a shot right in front of goal. In the Merseysiders' second outing of pre-season against Crystal Palace, he did the same thing. His ball control has also not been great during these early matches.

Of course, it is only pre-season and given Liverpool's track record with transfers it is likely that Nunez will come good under Jurgen Klopp. However, United fans are taking the opportunity to revel in the striker's early misfortune.

Using phrases like 'dodged a bullet' and mocking the price that Liverpool paid, United fans are having fun on social media before the season starts and Nunez (obviously) starts scoring. Here's a selection of the comments from Twitter:
