'He's a warrior' - Erik ten Hag's first words on new Manchester United signing Lisandro Martinez

Erik ten Hag has labelled Lisandro Martinez as a 'warrior' as he told Manchester United fans what they can expect from the newest signing.

After a frustratingly slow start, United's summer transfer window is now truly up and running following the arrivals of Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen and now Martinez, for whom the club has agreed a £46.8million, rising to £55.3m, deal with Ajax. Though the transfer remains subject to medical, visa and agreement of personal terms, the versatile defender is expected to put pen to paper on a five-year contract with the option of a further 12 months.

Ten Hag was keen on reinforcing his defensive options and after his initial target, Jurrien Timber, opted to stay at Ajax, attention turned to his teammate Martinez. Ten Hag knows the 24-year-old well from the three successful years they spent together in Amsterdam and he has told fans they can expect an aggressive yet skilful player.

“He’s a warrior and I think the fans will admire him. He has an attitude, fighting spirit,” Ten Hag told United's in-house media. “He brings aggressiveness in the game, in a good way. I think we need that. But also, he’s also skilful and he can deal with the ball and he’s left-footed.”

“I think it’s important, yeah," the manager continued when asked if already being familiar with his methods will help Martinez adapt to the Premier League. "I think the Premier League is high intensity, lots of challenges. We need such players [with fighting spirit].

“Certain ideas, he knows them. That is an advantage, clearly. But also he has to adapt, to a new country, a new club, new team-mates. So also a lot of things will be different.”
