'He didn’t want to talk to me' - David Beckham opens up on Manchester United exit and Sir Alex Ferguson relationship

David Beckham revealed Sir Alex Ferguson didn't want to talk to him once the legendary Manchester United manager had made his decision to sell him.

Beckham came through as part of the Class of 92 at Old Trafford and was a global superstar when he left for Real Madrid in 2003. His relationship with Ferguson is a major part of the former England captain's new documentary released on Netflix.

And Beckham has opened up on his bond with Ferguson, from the father figure role he played in the midfielder's rise through the ranks to the support he gave him after being sent off against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup and the change in attitude towards Beckham's marriage with Spice Girl Victoria and his lifestyle beyond football.

“I didn’t know I was poking him," said Beckham, speaking on the Stick to Football Podcast. "I suppose I knew that it wasn’t something that the manager wouldn’t agree with, but as long as I’m turning up for training on time, and playing at the weekend to the standards, then it wouldn’t be a problem. That’s what changed over the years – Cristiano [Ronaldo] came to the club, was doing what he was doing on and off the pitch, and the gaffer had softened at that point to a certain level. When I was doing it, it was a different time.

“The era I was playing, people weren’t driving Bentleys into training – the first time I drove mine into training, I saw the gaffer looking out the window – I parked it around the corner!”

He added: “There were certain moments where the gaffer told me something, and I’m quite stubborn – even with my parents, when they told me to do
