"He didn't get the help he needed": 'Struggling' carer was twice the limit when he crashed and flipped his car on the M60 at 6am, inquest hears

A carer who discharged himself from a hospital where he was being treated for alcohol withdrawal was twice the drink-drive limit when he crashed and flipped his car on the M60, an inquest heard.

Anthony Lee Pilling, 37, suffered 'catastrophic' injuries after his Skoda smashed into the rear of another and ended up on its roof. He died the next day in hospital.

Mr Pilling, from Gorton, who worked at Oakfield Croft care home in Sale, had just discharged himself from Manchester Royal Infirmary where he was receiving treatment when the crash happened at 5.41am on December 30, 2023.

Toxicological analysis showed he had 166mg of alcohol per 100mls of blood in his body when the limit for driving is 80mg, Stockport Coroners' Court was told today (Thursday). The driver of the other car was unharmed.

The officer said the Skoda was travelling between 30 and 40mph faster than the Dacia, which was said to be driving at normal speed along the 70mph stretch of the motorway.

Dash cam footage from another vehicle obtained by the investigation showed the brake lights were not applied before the crash on either vehicle, said the officer. A taxi driver had also told
