Haughey family 'so proud' after dual medal success

The family of Hong Kong swimmer Siobhán Haughey have said they are "so proud" of her after she secured a second medal at the Olympics in Paris.

Ms Haughey, who is a grandniece of former taoiseach Charlie Haughey, claimed bronze in the 100m freestyle event at La Defense Arena last night.

She finished behind Sweden's Sarah Sjostrom, who won the event in a time of 52.16, and Torri Huske of the USA.

It comes after she also took bronze in the 200m event earlier this week.

It is the second time that Ms Haughey has claimed two Olympic medals, having won a pair of silver medals for the 100m and 200m freestyle events in the Covid-delayed Tokyo Olympics of 2021.

Her medals in Tokyo were Hong Kong's first-ever Olympic swimming medals, and she has now secured her place as the most successful Hong Kong Olympian of all time.

Speaking outside the Parisian venue last night, her cousin Seán Haughey said a "huge crowd travelled over from Dublin" to support her.

The Fianna Fáil TD said the family were "absolutely ecstatic" following her fourth Olympic medal win.

He added that Siobhán Haughey, whose father Darach is Irish and mother Canjo is from Hong Kong, is "very proud" of both her Irish and Hong Kong heritage.

Her aunt Mary Haughey said she was "practically speechless", describing her niece as "the most amazing athlete since she was a child" and praising her dedication.

She was joined by another aunt, Ann Loomes, who said the family got to catch up with Siobhán briefly after the event -
